Land-Sea Use Integration for Sustainable Marine Econmoy ……Planning for Marine Economy
As the last territory on the earth, the ocean is the living space and treasure house for human beings. From a global perspective, World Ocean Week (WOW) in Xiamen serves as a platform for regional cooperation as well as for connecting marine and social science, technology, education, public awareness in making policies, management decisions and actions to achieve sustainable use of coastal and marine resources and for achieving sustainable development of the oceans. The annual World Ocean Week in Xiamen commits itself to providing a working platform for international cooperation and communication among the governments of coastal cities, national agencies, experts in marine science & technology, members of international and inter-governmental organizations and of relevant marine industries, enterprises and institutions. WOW intends to facilitate the healthy development of marine industries and to promote sustainable utilization of marine resources, publicizes the marine-related culture festivals, and involves the participation of the public and raise their awareness of marine environmental protection.
WOW develops from Xiamen International Forum for Coastal Cities (XIFCC) which was held on 2005 and 2006 respectively and the WOW has been successfully held for six years. The WOW is a week-long event which has been started on the first Friday of November every year. Last year, WOW 2010 attracting scholars, professionals and business representatives from about 40 countries and regions as well as over 10 international organizations. During the week, 8 marine-themed forums, 1 marine-themed exhibition, and about 10 marine cultural activities with extensive participation had been staged. Over 2,500 participants attended WOW 2010 forums and workshops and above 100,000 people of the general public participated in the exhibitions and cultural events. With fruitful results generated, it has won approvals from relevant international organizations and participants, and has received close attention from the press and media.
World Ocean Week in Xiamen 2011 is scheduled to be held on November 4-10 with the theme ofLand-Sea Use Integration for Sustainable Marine Economy: Planning for Sustainable Marine Economy Development.Marine economy has shifted from focus on direct utilization of marine resources into a new era featuring on high and new technology support and balance among socio-economic development and ecological environment. Promote land-sea use integration; formulate and implement marine development strategy; enhance the capacity of utilization, control and integrated management of ocean; planning for the development of marine economy are the key issues which needs to be solved by coastal cities, governments and various circles of marine fields. Under the theme of “Land-Sea Use Integration—— Planning for Sustainable Marine Economy Development”, WOW 2011 will convene 2011 International Ocean Forum in Xiamen (Main Forum), Seminar on Integrated Coastal Management and Urban Development for Developing Countries (Ministry-Level), Forum on Ocean and Coastal Management in Developing Countries, APEC Blue Economy :Forum--Promoting the Green Growth of the Marine Economy, Sino-Korea Workshop on Environmental Impact and Management Policy of Sea Reclamation, Workshop on the Benefits of Integrated Coastal Management Model and China (Xiamen) International Boat Show, etc. WOW 2011 will contribute in sustainable marine economy development by enhance communication, further reinforce the cooperation and promote friendship.
We expect that WOW 2011 will continue to be an international grand gathering attracting world’s attention on the ocean.
